Do You Need a VPN to Play at a Regulated Gaming Site?

Do you need a VPN to play at a regulated gaming site? In most cases, no. Not even close.

If you are in a location where your gaming site has a license and is permitted for use, then simply going to the site, logging in, and proceeding with play is usually the best option. You would not need to use a VPN.

In fact, using one could complicate matters for you.

What exactly is the point of a VPN?

Essentially, a VPN alters your internet connection for the websites that you visit. Instead of your actual position, your internet connection will portray that you are connected from a different location altogether.

This tool can prove to be beneficial when using unsecured public internet or wanting some extra privacy while online.

Legit online casinos often aren’t quite so keen on the location-changing bit.

A regulated operator has rules to follow. If its license only allows it to accept players from certain countries or regions, it needs to know where those players actually are.

A VPN can get in the way of that.

Gaming Sites Check Your Location

When you sign up with a regulated operator, there’s usually a fair bit of checking going on anyway.

You may need to confirm your identity, provide documents and pass age checks. Depending on the market, the operator can also use location checks to make sure you’re accessing the site from somewhere it’s allowed to operate.

Then along comes a VPN and suddenly your connection appears to be coming from another place.

That’s not necessarily going to cause an immediate problem, but it can look suspicious.

You might find yourself being asked for additional verification, or the site could block the connection altogether.

Can You Actually Use a VPN?

This comes down to the individual operator and its terms.

Some regulated gaming sites specifically don’t allow VPNs. Others may block known VPN addresses because they don’t want players bypassing geographical restrictions.

And that’s really the important bit.

Using a VPN to protect your privacy is one thing. Using one to make it look as though you’re somewhere you’re not is another.

If you’re trying to access a site that’s unavailable in your country, a VPN isn’t a clever shortcut around the rules. You could end up with account restrictions or problems when you try to withdraw funds.

Not exactly the result you were after.

What If You’re Traveling?

This is the point at which things become less clear-cut. Let’s say you are usually in a country where an operator is licensed, but you happen to be on vacation. You may have an account, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to access it from wherever in the world you’ve gone. If you think of establishing a VPN just to appear to connect to the site from your home country, check the policy first.

Do You Need One?

Probably not.

If the site is regulated where you live and you’re accessing it from that same location, there’s little reason to complicate things with a VPN.

Just use your normal connection and let the operator’s location checks do their thing.

Conclusion

VPNs have plenty of useful jobs elsewhere on the internet. Getting around a gaming site’s geographical restrictions isn’t one I’d recommend.

With regulated gaming, the boring answer is often the right one: play where you’re allowed to play, use the site normally, and check the operator’s rules if you’re traveling.
