10 VPN Mistakes That Leak Your Real IP on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android

A lot of people install a VPN, see that it is connected, and assume they are covered. The app says active, the padlock icon shows up, and everything looks normal. But an active VPN connection is not always the same thing as a secure one. Misconfigurations are far more common than most users think, and the results can range from minor inconvenience to serious privacy exposure.

A smart place to start is understanding how a VPN protects your IP address. Once you know what the VPN is supposed to do, it becomes much easier to spot the settings and gaps that can quietly undermine it.

Why VPN Misconfigurations Matter More Than Most People Think

DNS leaks, WebRTC leaks and direct IP address leaks each follow different exposure pathways, so there is rarely one fix that solves everything. Each leak type has its own cause, which means it needs its own test and its own setting adjustment.

This affects more people than just privacy enthusiasts. Dutch users who work remotely, stream geo-restricted content or log in to platforms from abroad need their VPN to perform exactly as expected. OpenVPN and WireGuard are usually the most reliable choices. Auto-select modes can sometimes switch to weaker options for compatibility or convenience. If your VPN allows it, choose the protocol manually in the app settings.

  1. Split tunnelling misconfigured

Split tunnelling can be useful, but it is easy to get wrong. If certain apps or sites are excluded from the VPN without careful review, sensitive traffic may bypass the tunnel and the user may never notice.

Many VPNs handle IPv4 traffic well but leave IPv6 traffic exposed. If that happens, your IPv6 address can still leak. Disable IPv6 at the operating system level or confirm that your VPN blocks it natively. This is especially common on Windows.

  1. Auto-reconnect failure on iOS

iOS handles VPN tunneling differently from other major platforms, and certain system-level connections on iPhone and iPad can bypass an active VPN tunnel entirely even when a kill switch is enabled. After every iOS update, check the VPN profile manually instead of assuming the old settings stayed intact.

  1. Outdated VPN client

Older app versions may include known weaknesses or miss newer encryption standards and bug fixes. Keep the VPN client updated on all devices, including Android, where background updates are not always installed right away.

  1. Never testing after configuration

This is one of the most overlooked mistakes. After changing any setting, users should check if your real IP is exposed with a dedicated IP lookup tool. It only takes a moment and quickly shows whether the VPN is working as intended.

Platform-Specific Settings to Review

Each operating system handles VPN connections in its own way, so the same setup does not work equally well everywhere.

Most users do not realise their VPN is leaking until something breaks, access is blocked, or privacy concerns start to surface. The fixes above are not difficult, but they do require a bit of deliberate setup.
