West Indies vs Scotland: A Fun Start to the T20 World Cup 2026 with Caribbean Win

The T20 World Cup 2026 started with a lot of excitement, and one of the first big games was West Indies vs Scotland on February 7, 2026. This was the first T20 match in the tournament, played at the famous Eden Gardens in Kolkata. West Indies, who have won the T20 World Cup twice before, were the favorites.

Scotland, a team that worked hard to qualify, wanted to surprise everyone. In the end, the West Indies won by 35 runs, thanks to great batting from Shimron Hetmyer and awesome bowling from Romario Shepherd.

The Setup for West Indies vs Scotland

The West Indies have a great past in T20 cricket. They won in 2012 and 2016, with stars like Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo. Lately, they have had good and bad times, but their team mixes old pros and new kids, like captain Shai Hope behind the stumps and young gun Shamar Joseph. They wanted to win big again. Scotland has been getting better in smaller cricket nations. They got into the 2026 cup by doing well in the European Qualifier, topping their group. Captain Richie Berrington leads a team with local heroes and some with big-league experience, like Mark Watt and Brad Currie.

This was match number two in the tournament, after another exciting game. Eden Gardens is known for loud fans and wet grass at night, which can change things. Scotland won the coin flip and chose to bowl first, a common pick in T20 to chase later. West Indies had to bat and make a big score. Fans didn’t know it would have a hat-trick and a quick fifty that changed everything.

West Indies Batting: Slow at First, Then Boom

West Indies began carefully. Openers Brandon King and Shai Hope faced good bowling from Scotland’s fast guys. Brad Currie and Safyaan Sharif kept runs low at the start, with only 47 in the first six overs, no wickets down. King hit four fours and a six, but Hope scored slowly, 19 from 22 balls, before Michael Leask got him out in the eighth over.

Things got fun when Shimron Hetmyer came in. He loves hitting hard and smashed six sixes in his 64 from 36 balls. He and Rovman Powell (24 from 14) added 81 runs fast, getting past 100. Powell hit two sixes but got out to Currie. Then Sherfane Rutherford joined, adding 36 with four fours and a six in his 26 from 13. Hetmyer got caught off Sharif, and Rutherford soon after, but Romario Shepherd’s quick 6 from 3, with a six, got them to 182 for 5.

This score was good on a field with some spin and jump. Scotland bowled well early but gave away runs later. Currie did best with 2 for 23, while Sharif and others cost more.

Hetmyer’s batting was key and got him the man of the match. Experts say his fast scoring turned an okay total into a tough one.

Scotland Batting: Good Teamwork, Then Big Fall

Chasing 183, Scotland needed a strong opening. George Munsey started with three fours, but early outs hurt. Michael Jones got out cheaply to Jason Holder, and Brandon McMullen was bowled by Shepherd. Munsey got caught off Shamar Joseph, making it 37 for 3.

Then Richie Berrington (42 from 24) and Tom Bruce (35 from 28) added 78 runs and gave hope. Berrington hit three fours and two sixes, Bruce two sixes. At 115 for 3 after 13 overs, they were close. But Gudakesh Motie got Bruce out leg before, and then Shepherd’s over in the 17th changed it all.

Shepherd got Matthew Cross caught, Michael Leask caught, Oliver Davidson bowled, and Safyaan Sharif caught in five balls, with a hat-trick. Scotland went from 133 for 5 to 133 for 9. Jason Holder got Mark Watt out to finish at 147 in 18.5 overs.

Shepherd’s 5 for 20 was his best ever, and the hat-trick was just the second for West Indies in the T20 World Cup. Fans called it old-school Caribbean fun.

Top Plays and Game Thoughts

Shimron Hetmyer’s 64 was the big deal in batting. He came in at 58 for 2 and hit fast, especially against spin. His sixes showed real power. Romario Shepherd’s bowling was the game-changer. His hat-trick – Cross caught, Leask caught, Davidson bowled – came when Scotland was fighting back. His mix of fast and slow balls tricked the middle guys.

For Scotland, Berrington and Bruce did well, but the quick fall showed they struggled against speed. West Indies used spin smart in the middle, with Motie and Hosein keeping runs down. Scotland’s choice to bowl first didn’t work because the wet grass wasn’t a big factor.

After the game, people were excited. Experts said the win helps West Indies’ points in Group C. Fans online loved Shepherd’s hat-trick, like old pros. Scotland’s coach said they tried hard but messed up at the end.

This game gets the West Indies going strong. They have tougher matches coming, but this helps. Scotland lost but showed they can play, and the next games will test them.
